Witchblade is a comic book series published by Top Cow Productions, an imprint of Image Comics, which ran from November 1995 to October 2015. The Witchblade comic was adapted into a television series in 2001, as well as an anime, a manga and a novel in 2006. Top Cow announced in September 2017 that the Witchblade comic would be relaunched in December 2017 with the creative team of writer Caitlin Kittredge and artist Roberta Ingranata. The series features journalist Alex Underwood as the main character. A new Witchblade comic series will return in February 2021 featuring new Witchblade creative team, writer Marguerite Bennett, artist Ariel Kristantina, colorist Bryan Valenza and letterer Troy Peteri. The original wielder of Witchblade, Sara Pezzini will return as the main character in this new series.

The Witchblade is a sentient gauntlet, itself the son of The Darkness and Angelus. The Witchblade possesses humans—typically women—as hosts on Earth. A New York City detective, Sara first encountered the Witchblade while on a case with her then partner, Michael Yee. After both officers were mortally wounded by criminal Ian Nottingham, the gauntlet suddenly left the possession of his employer, Kenneth Irons, and gave its power to Sara, healing her wounds. Danielle is a young ballet dancer who was born in New Orleans. After moving to New York to pursue her career, she experienced a mysterious dream in which she saw herself inheriting great power by means of a mystical gauntlet.

Dani found herself taking a walk and wandering to an antique shop the next day. It was there that she encountered Sara Pezzini, the current host of the Witchblade. Following Hope’s birth, he serves as the baby’s surrogate father and Sara’s confidant in issues involving the Witchblade. The owner of an antiques shop, the Curator is a sage-like spectator and occasional informant He is the second Primary antagonist of the series. One of Sara and Dani’s most trusted confidants, he knows much about the various Artifacts. The Curator later dies, spontaneously exploding after saying “all hope is lost”.

It was later revealed that the Curator was actually the Survivor, the mysterious mastermind behind all of the recent events in Sara’s life. The Curator’s brother, Tau’ma has sided with the Darkness and can pull Darklings from out of his head to attack or spy on others. He also wields a powerful cane with a gem-encrusted hawk head. She is neither of the Darkness nor the Angelus, but has unknown powers that are dormant. Hope is the subject of a search by several Artifact bearers following her capture by the Survivor. Hope is the “Codex” for the entire universe, meant to survive and ensure its survival.

The Survivor plans to kill Hope and replace her as the Codex in order to guarantee the resurrection of his own universe. She was romantically involved with Jake, but the two broke up when Jake discovered that she was running drugs. Jake later returned and shot Julie, but she survived, leading to her arrest and imprisonment. Julie was later released after serving her sentence and was reunited with Sara. While taking Hope to a fair, Julie was surprised by Aphrodite IV who killed her after shooting her in the head. Formerly a Captain of the British Special Air Service, Ian subsequently joined MI5. He underwent behavioural modifications for the purpose of infiltrating the Yakuza. Afterwards, he forgot his past and became Kenneth Irons’ bodyguard.

Ian has phenomenal skill with both ancient and modern weapons. Ian kills Sara’s partner Michael Yee. Kenneth Irons is a wealthy entrepreneur who discovered the Witchblade in Greece, Irons’ age is unknown and was the first main antagonist of the series. It was eventually revealed that he was a Templar Knight of the third crusade and that he once drank from the Holy Grail, granting him a healing factor and immortality, establishing his age as greater than 800 years. Sara’s former captain when she served at the 18th Precinct. He was the partner of Sara’s dead father, Detective Vincent Pezzini. An NYPD detective, Jake was Sara’s best friend and former partner.

He fell in love with Sara, but his feelings were unrequited. A demon came to Earth and entered Jake’s body, possessing him while he was wounded defending a weakened Sara. While in a coma he was placed in a hospital. When he woke up later, the god-like demon took full control of his body. Daughter of Maria, a deceased friend of Sara’s. Jackie Estacado is a former hitman of the mob and later becomes the host for the Darkness. The Darkness is one of the parents of the Witchblade and one of the primordial forces of the Witchblade universe. He is a supporting character in the witchblade series and is the main character in his owns series which is a spin-off to the Witchblade series. The Angelus is the light counterpart of the Darkness and one of the parents of the Witchblade. The Angelus possess many female hosts and the arch-enemy of the Darkness. The Angelus was the primary antagonist of the Darkness series and the third Primary antagonist of the Witchblade Series.

Tora No Shi is an assassin for hire and a former bodyguard for Irons. Sabine is a former lieutenant of the Angelus cult before becoming the Wheel of Shadows. She was a former host of the Angelus and has dated a boyfriend and Dani. The Son of Kenneth Irons who seeks to avenge his death and the ex-boyfriend of Daphne. The Fourth female android in a line of Aphrodites she had been assassin who almost never miss a target. A female British Knight who was also one of the Witchblade’s hosts and also teamed up with Medieval Spawn whom she had a relationship with. Following a pilot film in August 2000, TNT premiered a television series based on the comic book series which ran for two seasons from June 12, 2001 to August 26, 2002. In August 2004, Top Cow announced they had reached an agreement with Japanese animation studio GONZO to produce an anime adaptation of Witchblade, which began broadcast during April 2006 and ran for 24 episodes. In August 2004, Top Cow made an agreement with manga publisher Kodansha to produce a manga adaptation of Witchblade. The manga features a different plot and characters from the Witchblade anime and comic book but is set in the same continuity as both. Frank reluctantly agrees, and the two go to a small karaoke bar, where a group of college girls performs a hilarious and broken rendition of “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”. Rachel tries to figure out Frank’s life and says that if she gets him figured out then he has to sing. Frank agrees and Rachel guesses incorrectly, but Frank decides to sing anyway. Rachel wakes up in bed next to a sleeping Frank, presumably after sex. Nicki sees this and grows jealous of her sister. Rachel tells Frank about her and her sister’s dream of winning an Oscar and decides to do it for her sister. At the Oscars, Rachel performs “One Moment in Time” from the Oscar nominated film Queen of the Night that she co-wrote with Nicki. As she performs the stalker prepares to shoot her. Frank notices just in time and jumps in front of Rachel. He gets shot, and Rachel holds him in her arms, uttering the famous line, “Let him go, he’s my bodyguard! Frank returns to the mansion sometime later, still recovering from a shot to the arm. After the final bows, the entire cast returns on stage to perform a spectacular rendition of the song “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”.

The Bodyguard’s premiere production opened in London’s West End on 5 December 2012, following previews at the Adelphi Theatre from 6 November 2012. The show closed at the Adelphi Theatre on 29 August 2014, to make way for Made in Dagenham having come to the end of its contract with the theatre. A tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland commenced at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton in February 2015. The first non-English production had its first try-out on 12 September 2015, in the Netherlands. The show played at the Utrecht Beatrix Theater and had its premiere on the 27 September. Singer Romy Monteiro, who competed in the 2014 season of The Voice of Holland, was cast as Rachel Marron, with the role of Frank Farmer shared by Dutch actors Mark van Eeuwen and Dave Mantel. On 25 January 2016, producers announced actor Miro Kloosterman had joined the cast.

Carolina Dijkuizen portrayed the role of Rachel’s sister, Nicki Marron, until September 2016, after which singer Nurlaila Karim took over the role. April Darby alternated the role of Rachel Marron with Monteiro, while understudies Samantha Klots and Tjindjara Metschendorp portrayed the role when both singers were unable to perform. In March 2017 Talita Angwarmasse joined the cast as alternate Rachel Marron. The show closed at the Beatrix Theatre on 16 July 2017 and was replaced by the Dutch production of On Your Feet. The sets and costumes were shipped to Madrid to be used for the Spanish production. In November 2015 Bodyguard made its German debut in the Musical Dome in Cologne. The show ran until 2017 before moving to Stuttgart. German singer and actress Patricia Meeden, who was a contestant of The Voice of Germany plays the role of Rachel Marron. Jürgen Fischer and alternately Jadran Malkovich portray Frank Farmer, and South African actress Tertia Botha plays Nicky Marron. Following completion of the first UK tour, the production was scheduled to transfer to the West End’s Dominion Theatre which had been running the musical made from Queen songs, “We Will Rock You”, from 15 July 2016, booking for a limited run until 7 January 2017.

On 15 May 2015, producers announced that the show would make its North American Debut in the Fall of 2016 at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey for previews. In December 2016, Bodyguard made its Korean debut in LG Arts Center in Seoul and it is first production in Far East country. The show will run until 5 March 2017. Korean actress Jung Sun Ah, Korean Singer Yangpa and Son Seung Yeon will play the role of Rachel Marron. Lee Jong Hyuk and Park Sung Woong portray Frank Farmer and Choi Hyun Sun plays Nicki Marron. The other main cast includes Han Dong Gyu as Bill Devaney, Lim Ki Hong as Sy Spector, Lee Yool The Stalker, Jeon Jae Hyeon as Tony Scibelli and Kim Dae Ryeong as Ray Court.
